The Washington Commanders may be on the official selling block sooner rather than later. Many of those that were unsuccessful in purchasing the Denver Broncos have now turned their sights to the Commanders.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and music mogul and businessman Jay-Z have been seen meeting recently. Rumors continue to swirl that the two are interested in forming an ownership group to purchase the multi-billion dollar NFL franchise. Another high-profile name has been rumored to join their possible bid for Commanders' ownership. Who could it be?

The third person is rumored to be actor Matthew McConaughey. He also became a minority owner in the Austin FC, a Major League Soccer expansion team in 2019. He has also been a fan of the Commanders for years and is interested in becoming part of an ownership group.

“Matthew has always been a huge fan and his ties with the team go way back. They support his foundation and he’s good pals with Dan Snyder — he and wife Camila Alves were on Dan’s yacht over the Super Bowl last year.”

A source told the New York Post that Daniel Snyder doesn't want to sell to Jeff Bezos because he also owns the Washington Post. But he is close friends with McConaughey and his family and may be more inclined to sell the team to him. Whereas, Snyder's distaste for the Washington Post may prevent Bezos from being successful with his bid.

How much did Dan Snyder pay for the Washington franchise? How much could the Commanders sell for?

Daniel Snyder purchased the Washington Commanders in 1999 for $800 million. That purchase price included FedEx Field. He also accumulated the $155 million worth of debt that was accrued from the stadium. Snyder purchased the team after the death of former owner Jack Kent Cooke.

When he purchased the team, the annual revenue was $100 million. Six years later, the revenue had increased to $245 million.

There have been many scandals, including sexual harassment accusations against Snyder and allegations of a toxic workplace culture. There have also been allegations of financial improprities and the alleged misreporting of revenue from the team.

This has led to calls coming from across the NFL for the team to be sold. Now, it may just happen. Daniel Synder and his wife Tanya hired Bank of America Securities just last week to handle any future transactions, which could include the sale of the NFL franchise.

According to Forbes, the Washington Commanders are worth an estimated $5.6 billion. This means a potential owner may have to place a bid close to the $6 billion mark to successfully purchase the team.
