Cowboys fans rip Jerry Jones over latest update on Brian Schottenheimer as next HC - "Ultimate middle finger," "Sell the team"

Will the Dallas Cowboys hire Jerry Schottenheimer?

The Dallas Cowboys are looking for a new head coach after declining to retain Mike McCarthy for 2025 and beyond. However, the newest candidate is not someone their fans are eager to see.

On Tuesday, 105.3 The Fan's Shan Shariff reported that offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was expected to receive a head coach offer from owner/general manager Jerry Jones soon.

However, the development was met with outrage, as seen in the reactions below.

"The ultimate middle finger to fans from the Joneses. Disgraceful management," one wrote.
"I’ll believe it when I see it, but with that being said.. Sell the team," another commented.
"If true, it’s truly remarkable that Jerry managed to hire someone even less desirable than Deion and Kellen…. The worst part is I won’t even be shocked if this happens. It’s textbook Jerry," another said.

Here are other fan reactions.

"Why do I subject myself to this team year in and year out?" one said.
"Stop!" another begged.
"That would be what it would take for me to jump ship. I would officially denounce my fandom," another added.

Adam Schefter discusses Brian Schottenheimer-to-Cowboys rumors

The question looms: Why do the Cowboys suddenly want Brian Schottenheimer as their head coach? ESPN’s Adam Schefter sought to explain the rationale on Monday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show.

"I think the Cowboys absolutely love and respect Brian Schottenheimer and they want him there," he said. "But I don't know that that's as the head coach right now."
"Again the process will unfold and we'll see what twists and turns it takes and maybe it leads them back to Brian Schottenheimer as a head coaching candidate."

As noted earlier, the interest has been met with outrage and disdain. Sports Illustrated’s Matt Galatzan concurs, writing that a hiring would mark the culmination of a botched search that saw the Cowboys miss out on Detroit Lions coordinators Ben Johnson (who is joining the Chicago Bears) and Aaron Glenn:

"Not only did the Cowboys ostensibly move on from from a Super Bowl-winning coach in favor of a career long assistant with no previous experience leading a franchise, but their delay in making a decision on McCarthy caused them to miss out on many more qualified candidates."

One of his main gripes is how Schottenheimer’s offenses have performed in his 14 years as a coordinator: Only twice has a unit under him ranked in the top 10 in total offense, and five times in scoring.

Should Schottenheimer be hired, he will be entering a challenging situation — coming off a losing record, working for one of the most controlling front offices in professional sports and having little say in how he builds his ideal roster, whether it be via trades, the draft or free-agent signings.
