On Saturday, the Dallas Cowboys welcomed the Los Angeles Chargers to the AT&T Stadium for the two teams' final preseason outing. With Week 1 of the 2024 season just a fortnight away, both teams left their starters on the sidelines and gave their backups the chance to impress.
The Cowboys gave Trey Lance the entire game to prove his mettle. However, he had a night to forget. The 24-year-old quarterback completed 33 of his 49 pass attempts for 323 yards but threw only one touchdown pass and an astonishing five interceptions.
He was given the license to showcase his arm talent but it had the opposite effect of what the Cowboys intended. His tragic display led to a 26-19 loss against the previously winless Chargers, capping off a disastrous offseason for the team.
Fans on social media flamed Lance for his dismal display. Here are some of the reactions to the quarterback's underwhelming outing:

Fans relentlessly thrashed Lance's poor performance on X:
"I pray Trey Lance never has to start for us in a regular season game" - @Dakota4Six wrote
"Trey Lance gotta go he’s not it" - @Dro9051 opined
"Should have traded Trey last week. Great job front office" - @Bayzanity22 claimed
"If I'm Dak, I'm not signing anything with this ungrateful franchise. Good luck with bum Lance next year" - @qbtheking2 warned
The quarterback's display did little to boost his odds of signing a new deal with the Cowboys. His current deal will expire at the end of the upcoming campaign.
The 24-year-old would be worrisome about his future in the league. However, Dallas should also be concerned about their dismal quarterback situation beyond this season.
Trey Lance's dismal performance adds to Cowboys' quarterback concerns
Dak Prescott has only one year left on his current deal with the Cowboys and there's been little to no discussion about the veteran signing a new extension with the franchise.
As things stand, the three-time Pro Bowler could leave Dallas at the end of the 2024 season. However, he won't be the only one. The team's backup quarterbacks — Lance and Cooper Rush — will also hit free agency in 2025.
That means the Cowboys currently have no quarterback contracted to play for them next year. They'll either hand Prescott a new deal, looking for a stop-gap option, splurge money and assets to acquire a big-name quarterback, or draft a new signal-caller.
But for now, they find themselves in the peculiar position of having no quarterbacks on the roster at the end of the 2024 season.
