Trey Lance has had quite the fall from grace over the course of his career. Drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers after a monstrous trade-up, he was expected to eventually become the face of the franchise.

However, injuries and the eventual rise of Brock Purdy prevented that from happening, and he was eventually traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023 for a fourth-round pick. And even in his new team, he is still not receiving significant playing time.

On Sunday, footage emerged of Lance struggling heavily during practice, throwing multiple incompletions and interceptions:

Fans were quick to react after seeing the video on X.

"He's trash plain and simple," a fan said.

More of the ridicule can be seen below:

"Shocker the guy who started 1 season at NDSU sucks," one said.
"He used to be my qb in highschool, he was always inaccurate and indecisive," another reminisced.
"Cowboy fans think finding QB is easy. Smh," another said.

Trey Lance not giving up on NFL dream as final year of contract beckons

This April, the Cowboys declined to invoke Trey Lance's fifth-year option, which would make him a free agent once his rookie contract expires early in 2025. But even then, he is adamant that his football career will not be over.

He spoke just over a week ago during a private practice in the suburb of Colleyville.

"I've got no reason not to [be here]," Lance said (h/t ESPN). "I think of it that way. I guess I'm not in any position to have any slipups or anything like that, so for me, it's a no-brainer. ... I feel like I'm in a good spot. so I'm excited to get out there, get some reps and let it rip."

Meanwhile, team writers Mickey Spagnola, Patrik Walker, Kurt Daniels and Nick Eatman opine that Lance will find trying to steal even just the backup role for 2024 hard, even if management actively wants it, given incumbent Cooper Rush's success in limited starts and familiarity with most of the roster.

The team's first preseason game is at the Los Angeles Rams on August 11.
