Let us know if you have heard this story before, but the Dallas Cowboys choked from a winning position despite Stetson Bennett doing his best to hand it over to them on a plate from the Los Angeles Rams. In a scarcely believable finish to a slow-burning game until then in the 2024 preseason, the Rams quarterback threw a touchdown pass with just four seconds remaining and the extra point conversion gave them the win.
Yet, it should never have come to that. The Cowboys were given gift-wrapped presents four times by Stetson Bennett as he was picked off on that many instances. But Dallas quarterback Trey Lance could not engineer a drive of his own either to get a touchdown from their side, with Mike McCarthy having to rely on his All-Pro kicker, Brandon Aubrey, to keep the scoreboard ticking.
But even if the offense was sputtering, one would have thought that Dallas had a chance to see the game out because their defense was playing well. But just when it mattered the most, they made a mistake. During the two-minute warning, with Los Angeles trailing by six points, Stetson Bennett threw another interception. Three knees from there would have seen the clock out.
But a defensive holding call gave the football back to the Rams. And their quarterback was not going to miss this reprieve as he rallied his team to an improbable finish. While the Cowboys will not fret too much about losing a preseason game, what will worry them is the manner of their loss.

And their fans were already up in arms about it on social media. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, supporters were quick to slam the team from snatching away defeat from the jaws of victory. Here are some of those strong reactions from the social media platform.
Dallas were mercilessly trolled as some even compared their preseason form to their postseason form, where they have struggled with incomprehensible losses since the turn of the century. Here are some more responses from X.
"Cowboys are in postseason form already."
"Even in pre-season, it’s hurts to be a Cowboys fan. Y’all pray for us man"
"Cowboys and choking... What else is new"
Stetson Bennett's performance against Cowboys highlights Matthew Stafford's Rams' importance
Stetson Bennett should be rightly happy that he won the Rams this game against Dallas. But what he will also rue is that he was given an opportunity to show that he should be Matthew Stafford's successor and he did not take it.
The veteran quarterback has won a Super Bowl for Los Angeles, and his legacy is secure for years to come. He is also closer to his retirement age than others on the team. The former Georgia quarterback could have established himself in Sean McVay's mind as the person who takes on the mantle as the starting quarterback when the time calls for it. But that did not happen and this victory, though sweet, could be completely pyrrhic for him.
