Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his contract as the Dallas Cowboys head coach. Some have been wondering whether or not the team will extend McCarthy or not.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it publicly known that he plans on retaining McCarthy and has been satisfied with the job he's done in Dallas.

Jones re-addressed his stance this morning on his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan.

“What I’m not going to do this morning is get into any indication that I’m not interested in having Mike back,"Jones said. "I assure you I have been, for weeks, thinking about how we go forward. I feel good about Mike McCarthy.”

While Jones' stance seems firm on retaining McCarthy, not everyone's is. Cowboys legend Michael Irvin believes the team should move on from McCarthy.

Irvin doesn't believe Dallas' late-season surge warrants enough for him to retain his job and thinks the Dallas team needs more discipline.

Monday on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Irvin said:

"I just think it's time to go in another direction. I hear this 'late surge' and maybe staying with Mike McCarthy. I'm not on that. I'm not on that bandwagon.
"What I believe is this team needs more discipline. You can't come in soft and then try to get tough. You got to come in tough and then, and then lighten up, because then the guys will feel like they've earned some respect."

Mike McCarthy has been an NFL head coach for a while. He was the Green Bay Packers head coach from 2006-18, leading them to nine playoff appearances and winning Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was let go by Green Bay following the 2018 season and took a year off in 2019 before becoming Dallas' head coach prior to the 2020 season.

In his five seasons with the Cowboys, McCarthy has led them to the playoffs three times, finishing 12-5 in each of their three playoff seasons. He also helped the team capture two divisional titles in that span. Overall, he has a 49-34 record with Dallas.

While the Cowboys didn't make the playoffs this season, they've suffered many injuries, including losing Dak Prescott midway through the season for the remainder of the year. Dallas has finished their season strong, winning four of their last six games despite not having playoff aspirations.

There also haven't been any rumors of players or the team thinking or wanting McCarthy out. It seems like Mike McCarthy will be back with Dallas in 2025.
