It appears there has finally been some movement at The Star when it comes to their search for a new head coach. The Cowboys made the puzzling decision to wait until a week after Black Monday to part ways with Mike McCarthy, even going as far as to turn down the Chicago Bears' request to interview him.
When their exclusive negotiation window with McCarthy expired on January 14, the Cowboys decided they would go a different route, calling time on the Mike McCarthy era. Franchise owner Jerry Jones didn't wait too long to reach out to his top choice for the role - Deion Sanders.
“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry," Sanders told ESPN soon after. "After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”
Since then, the Cowboys have made no progress on Sanders but did interviewe four candidates - Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore, Seattle Seahawks assistant HC Leslie Frazer, former New York Jets HC Robert Saleh, and current OC Brian Schottenheimer. Of those four, it appears Schottenheimer is the new favorite to land the job.

On Thursday, January 23, Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. dropped a major update on Schottenheimer, tweeting:
"Look for the Cowboys to cross the finish line on hiring Brian Schottenheimer no later than Friday, possibly today."
Exploring Brian Schottenheimer's background with the Dallas Cowboys
Schottenheimer's roots run deep at Jerry World. The Cowboys OC is the son of the late great Marty Schottenheimer, the man who mentored Mike McCarthy.
He joined the Cowboys in 2022 as a coaching analyst and was elevated to the role of offensive coordinator in 2023 after Kellen Moore was shown the door.
Before landing a job in Dallas, he spent one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their passing game coordinator and three years with the Seattle Seahawks as their offensive coordinator. Russell Wilson made three straight Pro Bowls with Schottenheimer as his OC.
