Cowboys' Jerry Jones remains tight-lipped to questions about HC Mike McCarthy's future

Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy have been tied at the hip for the duration of the 2020s. However, after nearly half a decade together, the Cowboys head coach is down to the last dregs of his deal with the team. As the time winds down on the contract, McCarthy's team appears to be growing stronger, but will it be enough?

Jones was asked for an update on his feelings on the Cowboys head coach's new contract following their Sunday Night Football victory over Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per The Athletic. Jones said:

“Just so we’re clear, all I can say is what good of a job he’s doing. I don’t have thoughts that I would share as to anything about what we do with our days after we’re through playing this year. I don’t have anything I would share about that.”

Jones' Cowboys upset the rolling Tampa Bay Buccaneers who were coming off a 40-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers the previous week. Suddenly, after a sluggish start, the Cowboys have four wins in their last five games.

Mike McCarthy's defiant Cowboys still alive to earn winning record

The Dallas Cowboys were down to a 3-7 record without Dak Prescott, but suddenly the team finds itself at 7-8. If the Cowboys win out, they can still finish 9-8, salvaging a winning record in a season in which their last over .500 record was in Week 5.

For the Cowboys to accomplish this, they must not lose again in 2024. That means that Cooper Rush will need to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. At face value, this may seem impossible.

However, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is dealing with a concussion and could miss the game in Week 17. In Week 18, the Washington Commanders could have locked up their seeding, giving them a reason to rest quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Of course, the last time the Cowboys played against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 with Cooper Rush, they lost 34-6. Even without Hurts and a surging Cowboys team, they could have their hands full.

As for the Commanders, the Cowboys defeated the unit with Cooper Rush in a 34-26 win on Nov. 23. That win kickstarted their winning run. The Cowboys are eliminated from the playoffs, but will Mike McCarthy's team continue fighting until the bitter end?
