Could Mike McCarthy potentially receive a contract extension from the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn't seem opposed to the idea.

McCarthy is in the final year of the five-year contract he signed with Dallas in 2020. On Tuesday morning, Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan and was asked about potentially extending McCarthy.

Jones said it wouldn't be crazy to extend McCarthy, a former Super Bowl-winning head coach who presents many great ideas.

"I don't think that's crazy at all. That's not crazy. He's an outstanding coach. ... This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has been there, done that. He's got great ideas," Jones said.

After parting ways with coach Jason Garrett following the 2020 season, the Dallas Cowboys hired McCarthy to fill the position. McCarthy formerly coached the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018, winning one Super Bowl during his tenure. He took the 2019 season off from coaching.

The Cowboys struggled in McCarthy's first season as head coach, finishing with a 6-10 record and missing the playoffs. They would make the playoffs the next three seasons, winning the division two times during that span.

This season, at 4-7, the Cowboys are projected to have their worst season since 2020 under McCarthy. That's why it was a little shocking to hear Jones so optimistic about a McCarthy extension.

With their 4-7 record, the Dallas Cowboys currently hold the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This comes after their surprising win last week against the Washington Commanders.

The Cowboys' season is already over, especially since Dak Prescott is out for the remainder of the season. They're too many games behind Washington and Phily to have a chance to compete for the division.

While Dallas may not be playoff-bound this year, everyone, including coaches is potentially fighting for their jobs. When you look at Dallas' remaining schedule, they have some winnable games.

Dallas will face the New York Giants, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and the Commanders.

If they finish the year strong, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Mike McCarthy back as head coach next season.
