Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gives major update on possible Commanders sale

Jerry Jones: Dan Snyder
Jerry Jones: Dan Snyder's successor as Commanders owner won't be decided at league meetings

The quest for the new owner of the Washington Commanders is set to continue for at least a while.

Dan Snyder has been considered one of the worst owners not just in the NFL, but in all pro sports as well. His tenure has been marred by multiple controversies and scandals, the biggest of them being a yearlong investigation that concluded in July 2021. It was revealed that a toxic workplace culture had developed throughout his ownership, with sexual harassment, discrimination, and other misdemeanors commonplace and being ignored.

Long-suffering fans have been clamoring for him to sell the team, and they got some hope when late last year, he announced that he had hired Bank of America to explore "potential transactions", but not much progress has been made since then.

And speaking at the owners' meetings in Phoenix, Arizona (US time), Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, had this to say about whether a new owner for the Commanders had been identified (h/t the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala):

“No. No. There won’t be one here.”

That may be a disheartening thing to say for long-suffering Commanders fans; however, there is no shortage of rich men willing to take over the team. Should Snyder voluntarily sell the team or even be forcibly removed by a league vote, here are the likeliest candidates.

Who could possibly buy the Washington Commanders?

ABC-7 News (WJLA-TV) has identified four possible future candidates for future ownership of the Washington Commanders.

Arguably the most heavily favored of them all is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Back in 2019, Jason La Canfora, then an NFL writer for CBS Sports, reported that Bezos had shown interest in owning an NFL team, and those rumors only intensified when Snyder made his Bank of America announcement.

Since then, though, Snyder has reportedly been refusing to sell to Bezos, possibly because he is upset at how the Washington Post (which Bezos also owns) covered the investigation into his ownership. However, Fox Business' Charles Gasparino says otherwise:

Other candidates named by the Washington news station are Byron Allen, CEO of Entertainment Studios (it is noteworthy to mention that if his bid succeeds, he will the league's first-ever black team owner); Josh Harris, principal owner of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL's New Jersey Devils; and Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, co-founders of Clearlake Capital (who most notably unsuccessfully attempted to buy into Washington in 2020, back when Snyder was losing minority owners amidst the investigation into him).
