The Dallas Cowboys hit a new low on Sunday after a humbling 41-7 defeat at the hands of NFC East rivals Philadelphia Eagles. The blowout loss ensured their losing record for the first time since 2020 — a bitter disappointment for a team with lofty preseason expectations.
Quarterback Dak Prescott expressed his frustrations as he watched the team’s struggles from the sideline.
"Nobody plans to lose. Nobody plans to have a losing season, to be in this position," Prescott said.” You expect the playoffs every year. You expect to win this division and then to be in this place or whether it's at home, playing against this team usually for the division. That's not the case. Yeah, it's frustrating."

Prescott’s injury has left a noticeable void in the Cowboys’ offense. He guided the team to a 3-5 record before picking up a season-ending injury in Week 9 vs the Atlanta Falcons, showcasing the elite play that secured him a $60 million annual salary. Dallas has been unable to maintain consistency under his absence, averaging just 14 points per game over their seven-game losing streak.
Backup quarterback Cooper Rush failed to make an impact after taking the starting role and struggled to ruffle feathers when offered the opportunity to lead the offense this season. Injuries to key defensive players like Trevon Diggs and DeMarcus Lawrence have decimated what was once a dominant unit, leaving the Cowboys to allow an average of 30 points per game over the same stretch.
Cowboys fail miserably, far away from season expectations
The campaign was nothing but a disaster for the Cowboys who will look to finish the season with an 8-9 record with a win over the Washington Commanders at the AT&T Stadium.
After the debilitating loss vs the Eagles, head coach Mike McCarthy stated:
“We haven’t met our own expectations, let alone those of our fans. It’s imperative we evaluate every aspect of our performance and make the necessary adjustments.”
McCarthy is in the final year of his contract and next week could potentially be his final game with the Cowboys. When asked about his job status heading into the final game of their season, McCarthy said:
"Ask me that in eight days. I'm here to finish the race. That's my mindset and that's the team's mindset."
The Cowboys look poised to secure a top-10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft. Per reports, the front office is prepared to Strengthen the offensive line and secondary, though Prescott’s $60 million cap hit complicates their offseason flexibility.
For Prescott, it’s time to leave yet another season behind and look ahead.
“This organization has a history of bouncing back,” he said. “I’m committed to my rehab and returning stronger. We have the talent; it’s about execution and staying healthy,” he said.
For a franchise steeped in tradition, the road back to relevance begins with tough decisions and a renewed commitment to excellence.
