Darius Slay faces backlash from Eagles fans for cheeky dig at franchise’s fans: “Don’t play like bums”

Super Bowl LVII - Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay

While Darius Slay is a five-time Pro Bowler, he's a part of the Philadelphia Eagles defense that surrendered 252.7 passing yards per game during the regular season. That's the second-worst rate among all NFL teams, besting only the Washington Commanders' 262.2 per game.

This depressing display has elicited adverse reactions from Eagles fans, considered one of the most notorious fanbases for showing their dissent. While Slay believes that starting the playoffs on the road will be good for the team, football fans beg to differ.

NBC Sports Philadelphia's John Clark shared Slay's statement that the Philadelphia Eagles are better off playing the Wild Card Round as guests and not the hosts. The 2017 All-Pro and interceptions leader said:

“It might be a goood thing to go on road. They get to booing fast (in Philly). Don’t need the boos” 😂”

The Eagles picked up where they left off last season, winning 10 of their first 11 games. But from looking like the team that might finish as the National Football Conference's top seed, they travel to Florida to face the NFC South champions Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Darius Slay and the Eagles secondary must hold the fort against quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has helped the Bucs win five of their last six games. After playing for three teams in two seasons, Mayfield had a resurgence with Tampa Bay, finishing with 4,044 passing yards and 28 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers' pass defense has been as terrible as the Eagles this season, giving up 248.9 per game. However, Tampa Bay is tied for sixth (19.1) while Philadelphia is third-worst (25.2) in points allowed per game.

Darius Slay and the Eagles look to avert a disastrous season

At one point, the Eagles were poised to run away with the NFC East division title, giving them at least a home playoff game during the Wild Card Round. Their wins against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills showed that they looked like the real deal.

However, the once-dominant Eagles have lost five of their last six games, costing them a postseason home game. Worst yet, they've lost games to the Arizona Cardinals and the New York Giants, two teams with a losing record.

A disastrous performance during the Wild Card Round may spell massive change for the Eagles. As pass defense has been one of their grave concerns, Darius Slay's spot might be up for grabs.
