The Dallas Cowboys are searching for their next head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy, and one name continues to dominate headlines: Deion Sanders. The Hall of Famer and Colorado Buffaloes head coach has reportedly piqued the interest of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, but not everyone is sold on the idea.
Sports media personality Bill Simmons was critical of the potential hire of Sanders in Dallas on a recent podcast episode.
“Deion [Sanders], I think, would just be a disaster,” Simmons said. “It’s already dicey enough to just grab a guy from college and make him an NFL head coach, not having been in the league at all against anybody. But to especially do it with somebody who’s a pretty green college head coach.”
The Cowboys’ interest in Sanders reportedly stems from more than just his coaching career so far. Coach Prime made waves in the college coaching ranks, leading Jackson State from 2020-2022 before coaching the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023. Over the past two seasons, he's led Colorado to a combined 13-12 record.

Known for his charisma and larger-than-life personality, Sanders could revitalize the Cowboys’ brand as much as their on-field performance. However, his inexperience at the NFL level could be a major sticking point, raising doubts about his ability to handle the complexities of coaching at the highest level.
Deion Sanders to Dallas Cowboys: Masterstroke or a PR move?
Simmons also pointed out the rumors' broader implications, suggesting that the latest buzz surrounding Sanders might be more of a PR move than a genuine possibility.
“I also don’t really believe that story,” Simmons added. “It seems like it’s good for both sides to pretend they might hire Deion. I don’t think they’re gonna hire Deion, and if this blows up in my face, so be it.”
But the real question is: Are the Cowboys willing to take a huge gamble on an ex-player turned coach? Team owner Jerry Jones has a penchant for favoring bold moves, but picking the next head coach of one of the wealthiest sports teams worldwide needs a calculated decision.
The Cowboys are reportedly looking for a head coach who can deliver consistent results on the field, unlike McCarthy, who failed to elevate Dallas beyond playoff mediocrity. Candidates like Brian Flores, Kliff Kingsbury and Pete Carroll bring more proven experience, making them more logical options. However, none carry the cultural cachet of Coach Prime.
For now, the ball is in Jones’ court, and as always, Cowboys fans are curious about his next bold move for the franchise's future.
