Derek Barnett early career

Barnett attended Brentwood Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee. He recorded 60 tackles (18 for loss) and 5.5 sacks as a senior. He received a four-star rating from the recruiting network Rivals.com. He made a 2013 commitment to play collegiate football for Butch Jones' Tennessee Volunteers.

Derek Barnett’s NFL Career

During the Eagles' season-opening game against the Washington Redskins, Derek Barnett made his professional debut in a regular-season game and registered two solo tackles in a 30-17 win.

In the 28-23 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 6, Barnett recorded two solo tackles and was given credit for a partial sacking of quarterback Cam Newton. Newton was the target of his first career sack. He had two more sacks in the 37-9 Week 11 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Derek Barnett scored his first career touchdown in the 19-10 Week 16 win over the Oakland Raiders on a 23-yard fumble recovery. In 15 games and without making a start, he concluded his rookie season in 2017 with 21 combined tackles (18 solos) and five sacks.

He missed ten games in 2018, two in 2019 and three in 2020 and wasn't at his physical best in most games he played. Although his health improved as he was injury-free in the 2021 season, his stats did not, as he had eight penalties and 2.5 catches.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said during a game, "It's always him," after a defensive end penalty.
