The Kansas City Chiefs are a perfect 4-0, but their season hasn't been as smooth as their record suggests. The offense hasn't been as potent as expected, and the team has had to rely on its defense to get them past the finish line.

To make matters worse, the Chiefs had seemingly lost wide receiver Rashee Rice for the season after he suffered a freak injury in Week 4 over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The sophomore star suffered a knee injury after Patrick Mahomes crashed into him while trying to stop Kristian Fulton, who intercepted a pass from the Chiefs superstar and attempted to return it for pick-6.

The team was under the impression that Rice may have suffered a season-ending ACL tear. While they were slightly off the mark in their assumption, the latest update isn't as positive as they hoped.

Rashee Riceinjury update: Did Chiefs WR tear his ACL?

Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Rashee Rice has an LCL injury and will undergo surgery to repair it. However, there's a possibility that it's the only damage he sustained from Mahomes' hit, and his ACL is still intact.

While that's terrific news for the wide receiver considering the circumstances, it does not improve his odds of returning to the field this season.

Rashee Rice return timeline: When could Chiefs WR come back?

Per Rapoport, Rice will be in recovery for at least three months after his LCL surgery. However, that's the best-case scenario.

If the procedure to repair his LCL injury reveals that he has also damaged his ACL, his recovery timeline will be extended.

Regardless of the final diagnosis, Rice likely won't play again this season and will return next year. This is a massive blow to the Chiefs' offense, which hasn't been up to the mark and now has to find a way to negate losing one of their most important players.
