The Liam Coen coaching drama surrounding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator role and head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars has taken another turn.

Coen's recent phone call to the Bucs HC Todd Bowles has escalated the situation after it was reported that he is the frontrunner to become the next HC of the Jaguars.

Amidst the backlash, Ashley Coen, Liam's wife, took to X on Friday morning, to address the misinformation and defend her family. She wrote:

"I hate that I even have to say this, but when people are negative about my kids, I will not be silent. Our son is sick, we were at the hospital yesterday seeing a specialist for his autoimmune disease. Please don't spread misinformation and assume because you heard one side.”

Her response came in after multiple reports surfaced claiming Coen was using their son's medical condition to deflect criticism surrounding him. It took a dramatic turn following the Jaguars dismissing their former GM Trent Baalke.

Coen had initially backed out of the gig for the Bucs, for a new deal worth $4.5 million a year, thus making him one of the league's highest-paid coordinators. But Baalke's departure led the Jaguars to re-engage with Coen and he agreed to take the job by Thursday night. And to rub it in, he called Bowles late Thursday to tell him.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans felt betrayed by Liam Coen

This decision caught the Buccaneers off guard, as they were finalizing Coen's new contract, reportedly worth $4.5 million annually. The sudden reversal left the team scrambling to fill the position while fans voiced their frustration over Coen's perceived lack of transparency.

A report from the Tampa Bay Times blew the situation out of the water though: It said that Coen 'hoodwinked' the Buccaneers about his plans. He told coach Todd Bowles that he had missed the communications because he was at a medical appointment with his son, mentioning the Jaguars only briefly. Hours later, Coen told the Buccaneers that he was heading to Jacksonville.

That perceived duplicity, added to their history of key staff bailing out without warning, didn't help any in harnessing the outrage among fans.

Coen's sudden departure frustrated the Buccaneers community and they questioned his loyalty. After all, he has been integral to pivoting the Buccaneers offense from dead last to third in total offense and fourth in scoring. So, for him to be leaving seems like a betrayal to many.
