Ex-Cowboys linebacker outlines role Jason Garrett could play with HC search in full swing

Former NFL linebacker Jay March shared his take on the Dallas Cowboys, the team he played with for four seasons, on Thursday. The Cowboys are in turmoil after a 7-10 playoffs-less season and a decision on who to hire as their next head coach now looms.

"My @dallascowboys Take: This is only my opinion. Dallas will hire Jason Witten as the HC with Kellen Moore as the OC and Asst head coach," March wrote on X.

"The meeting with Robert Saleh was to gage interest as a DC/asst HC with a young and talented defense . Keeping the Dallas Def in a 4-3 with one of the best DCs out there. Dark horse staff addition: Jason Garrett in some sort of Senior Advisory Role."

Jay March believes that making the correct decision will allow the defense to stay in the same scheme, which will keep some consistency.

Jason Garrett said next Cowboys HC will need to be a good communicator/leader

Jason Garrett spent 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, starting as an offensive coordinator and then working his way up to head coach. While he is no longer in a coaching role, Garrett knows what it means to work for the organization.

On this week's episode of Kevin Clark's "This is Football," Garrett said that the head coaching role with Dallas is unlike any other in the NFL due to Jerry Jones' involvement.

He said that since Jones is not only the owner but also the general manager the next head coach will have to be great at communicating and leading to be successful.

"The kind of coach who thrives there is someone who is a really good coach," Garrett said. "There is no doubt that ownership is involved. Jerry Jones is the general manager of the team, so the owner/general manager is involved, and he should be.

"That's how the organization is set up. I think you have to be an excellent communicator. I think you have to be an excellent leader."

The Cowboys will need to choose a head coach who will hopefully get them back to their winning ways. In 2023, Dallas showed true promise and won the NFC East but fell to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.

With little to no moves made in free agency last season, Dallas struggled on both sides of the ball in 2024.
