Ex-Cowboys Pro Bowler issues 3 words of caution on Bill Belichick to Cowboys as Deion Sanders rumors run rampant

Bill Belichick, Deion Sanders linked with replacing Mike McCarthy as Cowboys HC

All things considered, Monday was a pretty eventful day for the Dallas Cowboys. The franchise made the puzzling decision of waiting a whole week to fire Mike McCarthy as head coach. The McCarthy era ends with a 49-35 record in the regular season and will go down in franchise history as an era that yielded just one win in the playoffs.

With McCarthy out the door, the rumor mill wasted no time in linking a plethora of candidates with the vacant role at The Star. One name that featured heavily is Bill Belichick.

The former New England Patriots head coach signed a five-year, $50 million deal with the University of North Carolina but reportedly has a $10 million buyout clause in his contract that would allow an NFL team to poach him before he even gets started at Chapel Hill.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Belichick would have been interested in the Cowboys' job had Jerry Jones signaled to him that the position would become available.

"Belichick and his camp never received any indication during back channel conversations that the job would open up, which is partly why he ended up at UNC," Schultz added.

However, former Cowboys Pro Bowler Dez Bryant was in no mood to buy that report.

"Don't be lying," Bryant tweeted in response to the report going viral on X (formerly Twitter).

Potential replacements the Cowboys can explore ft. Deion Sanders

It appears Jerry Jones has already reached out to Deion Sanders, the man who won a Super Bowl with the franchise back in the glory days. Sanders is currently coaching the Colorado Buffaloes but with both his sons - Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders - set to enter the NFL in April, speculation has run rampant that Sanders could follow them to the league.

On Monday night, Sanders told ESPN:

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders has also been linked with the vacancy at the Las Vegas Raiders, though the team appears to be leaning toward Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson.

If Sanders is not in play, that leaves the Cowboys with fewer options. Pete Carroll and Brian Flores have both landed interviews with multiple teams while Kliff Kingsbury could also be a potential option to consider.

Another name who has been linked with the Cowboys over the last 24 hours is Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore, who spent 2022 as Dallas' OC before being replaced by Brian Schottenheimer.

Moore spent 2023 as the L.A. Chargers' offensive coordinator before landing with the Eagles in the same role in 2024. This is currently his sixth season as an NFL offensive coordinator.

Former Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, currently the head coach at Liberty Christian in Argyle, has also been linked with the job.
