It appears more than a few NFL personalities were flummoxed with how Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones went about his business this week. A week after Black Monday, Jones decided to stop short of putting a contract extension on the table for Mike McCarthy, smoking the exclusive negotiation window they had until Jan. 14 right down to the nib.

McCarthy is now a free agent and will likely draw interest from the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, Jones has wasted no time in his search for a replacement. On Monday morning, reports emerged of Jones reaching out to two-time Super Bowl champion Deion Sanders, arguably the hottest name in the college football coaching world.

However, the Colorado coach appears torn between staying with the Buffaloes or joining Jones in Dallas.

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing. I love Jerry and believe in Jerry," Sanders told ESPN on Monday. "After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community."

One man who believes Jones did McCarthy dirty in this whole process is former Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers corner Richard Sherman. On Tuesday's episode of his podcast, the former "Legion of Boom" member had some harsh words for Jones, saying:

“There’s been a couple dick moves by the Cowboys. The Cooper Rush situation where he just had to play the game and he got $250,000 bonus and they played Trey Lance? D*ck move. Not allowing McCarthy to interview with the Bears when you knew you were going to fire him? D*ck move.
"Then to wait this long and not be in the first window to interview Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. Why? That’s the part I don’t get. Unless you’re telling me that you talked to Deion and he says for the right price, I’ll hear y’all."

Everything we know about Cowboys' HC search so far

Deion Sanders is clearly the name most strongly linked with "America's Team," but two more candidates have popped up over the last two days.

One of those is Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who once served as Dak Prescott's backup before heading into coaching. Moore also served as the Cowboys' offensive coordinator in 2022 before being let go and joining the LA Chargers and eventually landing with the Super Bowl-chasing Eagles.

The second name is former All-Pro tight end Jason Witten, who is currently the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas.
