Bill Belichick knows a thing or two about creating winning teams. The current North Carolina head coach won six rings with the New England Patriots during his NFL days, and he's widely considered the greatest coach of all time in the league.
But that doesn't mean that he has all the answers. His unique approach to resting players had doubters.
Belichick fostered a mentality where every player was the same, and stars would not get the benefit of the doubt on a roster led by him. The best example of this was his treatment of star quarterback Tom Brady, which isn't universally agreed on.
Former superstar cornerback Richard Sherman, who himself lost a Super Bowl playing against a Belichick-led team, thinks star players should get privileges, especially as the salaries are related to their levels:

"Bill, that's enough," Sherman said. "How do you explain to them that you're paying some guys $50 million and other guys $500,000? They understand that's how football is. This isn't New England again. Everybody gets confused with the New England mentality. And everybody's even. No, everybody's not even, everybody's not created equally on these football teams.
"And I guarantee you, everybody on that [Chiefs] roster fully understands who the guys are and who not the guys are, who has to play and who will not play. And I don't think they will bat an eyelash or feel any offense to it."
The subject of the talk was whether the Kansas City Chiefs should rest some of its key players for their season finale, with the first seed already wrapped up. The coach does not like the idea, while the former cornerback says the players understand when a superstar gets benefits.
Bill Belichick's sideline return will come in 2025
In one of the most shocking developments of late 2024, Bill Belichick decided to sign with the University of North Carolina to become their leader, venturing for the first time in college football as a head coach.
Belichick needs 15 wins to become the head coach with the most wins in the history of the NFL, and many expected him to take a pro job to pursue Don Shula's all-time record. His move to college football took NFL circles by storm.
