Bill Belichick is set to become the new University of North Carolina coach after almost a year without a coaching job. Belichick spent 24 years as the New England Patriots helmsman before Robert Kraft parted with him at the end of the 2023 NFL season, which led to rumors and speculation about his future.

After failing to land the Atlanta Falcons coaching role, he signed deals to have a more significant presence in the media. That changed this week as UNC agreed to his terms. However, before that, Belichick could have made a shocking decision and returned to one of his old teams.

Diana Russini of The Athletic reported on Saturday that Belichick was interested in the New York Jets a couple of weeks ago.

"About two weeks ago, the New York Jets were informed (and were stunned to learn) that there was interest in their organization coming from none other than … Bill Belichick," Russini wrote.

"The same Bill Belichick who, famously (or infamously, from the organization’s perspective), was the Jets’ head coach for less than a day 24 years ago, before scribbling on a piece of paper, 'I resign as HC of the NYJ.' Belichick took great pleasure in torturing the Jets over his years as Patriots coach — and even more so in the past year as a TV analyst," Russini added.

Belichick's relationship with the New York Jets could have been like the one he had with the Patriots, but he signed with New England after leaving the Jets hanging moments before he was about to be introduced as their new coach.

Over the years, he dominated New York and the rest of the NFL while winning six Super Bowls with the Pats, creating one of the best dynasties in league history.

Belichick took a jab at Aaron Rodgers, Jets by citing dominance with the Patriots

During an October episode of the "Pat McAfee Show," Belichick trolled the Jets when the host asked if he had balls from his Jets games.

"The one behind me is, I think that was our 21st straight win. I had a few Jets balls up there on the shelf, so thoughts be good time to pull them out," Belichick said.

The Patriots had won against the Jets ahead of that episode, and the coach didn't miss the chance to diss one of his favorite opponents during his Patriots stint. It would have been a massive surprise if he took the Jets' job.
