Cam Newton, well-known for his bold takes about the NFL, explained leaving out Patrick Mahomes out of the QB Trust Rankings top 5.
Last season, Newton had called the Detroit Lions dark horses to reach Super Bowl LVIII, and they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. In that same episode, he made a pitch to give running back and former Carolina Panthers teammate Christian McCaffrey the MVP award, which eventually went to Lamar Jackson.
On his podcast 4th & 1, he gave one of his most shocking opinions yet. On Thursday, the 2015 MVP revealed the current top 5 of his "QB Trust Rankings" list (starts at 1:42:04), with Mahomes not one of them, as he included:
- Lamar Jackson
- Jared Goff
- Josh Allen
- Joe Burrow
- Sam Darnold

Newton claimed that Patrick Mahomes isn't a top 5 quarterback, even though his Kansas City Chiefs are this season's last undefeated team (1:53:47):
"He's not playing up to the caliber that we expect (him) to play. Even sitting at 6-0, thay have found ways not to lose. And teams have found ways to lose those games."
Cam Newton shares thoughts on Russell Wilson, Aaron Rdgers, and Brock Purdy
In that same episode, Cam Newton also shared his thoughts on some of the league's other top quarterbacks. He began by discussing Russell Wilson's triumphant debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New York Jets (02:26):
"I'm not sold yet. ... In the next couple games that they got going on, it will be hard for me to think that Russell Wilson will do what Justin Fields did with the six games he played."
Sticking to that game, he also discussed Aaron Rodgers' postgame interview, where the multiple-time MVP mentioned accountability (25:49):
"I'm goint to say it how Nike tells: just do it. You know what you got to do. ... It's easier said than done."
Cam Newton also discussed Brock Purdy's purported locker-room lecture from Kyle Shanahan after the Chiefs had beaten the San Francisco 49ers (32:59):
"Talk to me when he (is) Top 10, couple Pro Bowls, Super Bowl under his belt. ... That's not to say ain't nobody else coachable, but we're making storylines out of nothing, like that's what he's supposed to do.
"That's not to say that when you get all the accolades and achievements, you become uncoachable. But it's like, bro, is this really a story?"
