"Classless", "They're 5th rate woke trash" - Fans blast NFL Network for cutting to commercial during Steelers legend Franco Harris’ tribute

Las Vegas Raiders v Pittsburgh Steelers
The family of the late Pittsburgh Steelers running back Franco Harris as the Steelers retire his jersey

Pittsburgh Steelers legend Franco Harris passed away days before Christmas at the age of 72. At halftime of the Steelers game versus the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16, a tribute to the life of Harris took place. However, fans watching the game on NFL Network went to a commercial break as the tribute was taking place.

This didn't sit well with NFL fans and they expressed their displeasure on Twitter, mentioning how disrespectful it was to have done so:

The tribute to the life of Harris included the retirement of his No. 32 jersey, the third such honor in Steelers history. What's more, the tribute to the Pittsburgh Steelers great came on the night they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception.

In the 1972 AFC Divisional Round game versus the Oakland Raiders, Harris caught the ball off a deflection and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown. It is arguably the greatest play in NFL history. Harris will forever be remembered for that play as well as his stellar career with the franchise.

Franco Harris and his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh selected Harris in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft out of nearby Penn State University. Harris rushed for 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie season in the league. He took home the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for his performance that season. In all, Harris had eight 1,000-yard rushing seasons with Pittsburgh.

Harris stood out in the playoffs during his time with Pittsburgh, rushing for 1,556 yards and 16 touchdowns in 19 postseason games. In four career Super Bowl games, Franco Harris had 354 yards and four touchdowns. His 354 yards are the most career yards in Super Bowl history, while the four touchdowns are tied for the second-most in Super Bowl history.

Even if fans couldn't see the tribute live, they can still watch the video of it. However, it doesn't feel like the appropriate way to celebrate the life of the great Franco Harris.
