Christian McCaffrey had a chance to have a monstrous performance against the New York Jets on Monday night. But there's been some shocking news.

Just hours before the game, the San Francisco 49ers running back was ruled out with a calf/Achilles injury. Despite being listed as questionable after limited appearances in practice, he had been confident about playing.

Given his dominance on the field, McCaffrey would have given fantasy football players a large score. That is why they were especially devastated.

More of the shock and dismay can be seen below.

"BRUH WTF MY FANTASY TEAM COOKED NOW," one lamented.
"Costing us fantasy games in week 1," another sighed.
"CMC fantasy managers are ruined," another "prophesied."

Exploring 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey’s current injury

This problem that Christian McCaffrey has had to face can be traced back to last month.

It was the beginning of the preseason, and teams were set to do in-game snaps for the first time since January-February. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year was expected to be a spectator in the games but still actively practicing. Then head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that he had strained his calf and would miss two sessions.

Asked for when a return would take place, Shanahan said:

"You also want it to be [resolved] badly, but this stuff does take time. Every day I hope it gets resolved, but I have no timetable on it, didn't surprise me coming into this. I'm going about coaching our team, getting them ready for Week 1, and hopefully it'll get resolved sooner rather than later."

Then, just days before tonight’s game, McCaffrey was asked about his injuries. He said:

"No, not a concern for me."

Other notable inactives on the 49ers roster include backup QB Joshua Dobbs and All-Pro and Pro Bowl safety Talanoa Hufanga. For the Jets, their list of inactives is led by sophomore running back Israel Abanikanda and former starting right tackle Max Mitchell. Haason Reddick is also not playing, as he continues to hold out for a trade.
