First openly gay NFL player Carl Nassib announces NFL’s sizable donation to LGBTQ non-profit

Carl Nassib has played his final snap in the NFL, but he hasn't concluded his interactions with the league. In an appearance on an October 11 edition of "Good Morning Football," the former member of the Cleveland Browns announced that the NFL contributed $100,000 to The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ non-profit geared to help young members of the community.

"I'm happy to announce that the NFL is continuing their support by making a $100,000 donation to the Trevor Project," Carl Nassib said. "Young LGBTQ people are actually four times more likely to harm themselves, and so the Trevor Project provides life-saving support to these kids. And so, this $100,000 is going directly to that organization to continue that work." (0:35)

The organization prioritizes helping with mental health and suicide prevention. According to the organization's website, there is a suicide hotline run through The Trevor Project, designed to help those suffering from depression and other troubles.

The NFL routinely spotlights certain causes throughout their season. Perhaps the most famous one, "My cause my cleats," allows players to wear cleats in Weeks 13 and 14 to spotlight causes they care about in a bid to raise awareness and donations.

The Trevor Project isn't the only organization associated with Carl Nassib to make a big move towards helping children. Nassib's other non-profit, Rayze, pledged to match every donation made up to $25,000 to GENYOUth.

GENYOUth is a non-profit organization created with the goal of helping kids get the nutrition and exercise they need.

The announcement was made on Instagram with a picture of Nassib standing next to a Rayze logo, raising his hand. Here's what Nassib's post said:

"I am raising my hand during #HungerActionMonth to support @genyouthnow in its mission to #EndStudentHunger! 1 in 5 kids lives in food insecurity, and they all deserve to be well-nourished and physically active. During September, rayzeapp is matching every donation to GENYOUth, up to $25,000." the post said.

Nassib continues to work despite retiring from the NFL after the 2022 season. The pass rusher played for the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Las Vegas Raiders.

His career featured two stints with the Buccaneers, including a one-year stint at the end, giving his football career a somewhat full-circle ending.
