Dave Butz, a former Washington Commanders defensive end and defensive tackle, passed away at the age of 72. He played college football at Purdue, where he was a Consensus All-American in 1972. He was drafted fifth overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1973 NFL Draft. The defensive star played the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Cardinals.
He joined the Commanders prior to the start of the 1974-1975 season. The former Purdue star spent 14 seasons with Washington. In his time there, he finished third in the Defensive Player of the Voting in the 1983-1984 season. He had 11.5 sacks that season. He also made the First-Team All-Pro and the Pro Bowl in the 1983-1984 season.

He was selected to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1980s. In 2014, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In his 16-year NFL career, Butz had 64 sacks and two interceptions.
He played in a total of 216 games during his NFL career, starting 180 games for Washington.
