The Giants retained head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen even after a disastrous 3-14 season. This raised eyebrows across the NFL, including franchise legend Victor Cruz.

Cruz, who helped the Giants win Super Bowl XLVI, has been a vocal observer of his former team's recent struggles. His perspective carries weight given his understanding of the organization's culture under John Mara's leadership.

Speaking to Forbes on Monday, Cruz offered his candid thoughts on the Giants' controversial decision to maintain stability at the top.

"It surprised me a little bit, but I think if I know (owner) John Mara, he wants to create some sort of continuity from the head coach and GM position," Cruz said.

"I think if he let Schoen go, that would have been like five general managers in 10 years or something like that. He wants to get to a point where he can build some continuity with the front office and really be able to grow this year over a number of years and then see where they head out."

The Giants' commitment to continuity comes following a season in which the squad deteriorated substantially from their playoff berth the year before. Under Daboll and Schoen's direction, the team went 18-32-1 over three seasons, including a 1-1 record in postseason play.

Victor Cruz's analysis aligns with John Mara's recent statements about the organization's direction. During a press conference on January 7, Mara emphasized the importance of building the team "the right way" rather than making hasty changes.

This measured approach hasn't sat well with many critics, especially given Mara's own admission that the roster isn't better than when Daboll and Schoen took over. The Giants face critical decisions, particularly at quarterback, where Tommy DeVito stands as the only QB currently under contract.

As reported by The Athletic on Wednesday, the organization will need to see at least eight or nine wins. They also need to see the promising play from a rookie quarterback to warrant another season for the current regime.

With the third overall pick in the upcoming draft and multiple quarterback prospects available, the path forward will be interesting.
