Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is plotting a bold return to coach the team in 2025. Ryan was the Jets coach from 2009 until 2014.
Ryan led the $6.9 billion worth Jets (according to Forbes) to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in his first two seasons but after four years of not making the playoffs, he was fired. He went 46-50 all-time as the head coach of the Jets.
Nearly 10 years after being let go, Ryan says he will interview for the vacant head coaching job during an interview with former Islander Rick DiPietro and New York radio veteran Dave Rothenberg on ESPN.
"Well, you're either coaching it or allowing it to happen," Ryan said. "You know, you gotta have a lot of lead in your pencil to play this game, but you need to focus, you're thinking about your fundamentals, your technique, all these types of things. And the lack of discipline is brutal, there's just no question bout it. I don't see the attitude, I don't see the mentality and that's certainly going to change if I take over."

Ryan also revealed his status for the application, saying he is yet to have a conversation with the team's front office.
"I believe I will, but no I have not had any conversations with anybody in the organization but I believe I will. Look, they're not gonna bring anybody in I'm sure until after the season's done and then this is the way Woody has always operated and we'll see what happens once the season's over," he added.
After being fired from the Jets, Ryan became the head coach of the Buffalo Bills for two seasons.
Jets begin search for new head coach and general manager
New York fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas this season, as the Jets failed to make the playoffs.
Jets chairman and owner Woody Johnson will lead the process and has hired The 33rd Team in a support role to help identify candidates in addition to coordinating interviews, the team website said.
Johnson fired Saleh after a 2-3 start, as he said he wanted to give the team a spark.
"This is one of the most-talented teams that has ever been assembled by the New York Jets," Johnson said, via the team website. "I wanted to give this team the most opportunity to win this this season. I feel that we had to go in a different direction and that's why I did that today. The change that we made today, that I made, I believe will bring new energy and positivity that will lead to more wins starting now.
"I've been doing this for 25 years now. This is probably the best team I've had. I just felt that the best way to go forward with a new direction and taking Jeff Ulbrich and making him the interim head coach, I thought that would get the most out of this team and give us the best chance to do what we all want to, which is going to the playoffs."
However, the Jets ended up struggling even after the coaching change. New York is 4-12 and will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
