They did it. They actually went out and did it. After not that much deliberation but a laundry list of interviews, the Chicago Bears have made the decision to hire Ben Johnson as their next head coach, Johnson's agency announced on Monday, January 20.
Johnson will now take over a franchise that flattered to deceive in 2024 despite making a slew of moves to ensure rookie quarterback Caleb Williams would hit the ground running. Instead, the Bears limped to a 5-12 season, bottom of the NFC North. Now, the Bears have one of the league's most impressive offensive masterminds at the helm, giving hope that there could possibly be a turnaround in their fortunes next season.
However, not everyone is convinced of that potential. Former Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky outlined why history has him on the wrong side of the Ben Johnson hype.
“Here’s the hesitation I have. We don’t have a lot of evidence in the NFL specifically over the last 6-7 years where a team has a young quarterback and they go chase an offensive-minded head coach and it works. We’re way too in love with that in the NFL. That’s what gives me a little bit of hesitation with this one,” Orlovsky said on ESPN's First Take.

Detroit Lions staring at brain drain after Ben Johnson's move to Bears
The Detroit Lions fell short in the Divisional Round by some distance on national television but that might not be the end of their problems. While Johnson has already landed a job in Chicago, his colleague Aaron Glenn is also all but certain to land a head coaching job this month.
Both the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets are eyeing Glenn to be their new head coach and he is set to have a follow-up interview with the Jets later today. NFL Network reported that the Jets' plan is to not let Glenn leave the building without signing on the dotted line.
The Lions, then, will have to deal with the lack of two of their top talents on the coaching staff next year. Both Glenn and Johnson are also expected to take some assistant coaches with them to build their staff for the 2025 NFL season, giving the Lions an even bigger headache.
