The New York Jets are reportedly eyeing Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn for their vacant head coach position. To which, former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason has expressed strong reservations.

For Esiason, this feels like déjà vu.

"I don't necessarily know that the Jets is the best place because we've seen it. It's not the best place for an inexperienced head coach," he declared on today's episode of Boomer & Gio show this week.

The Jets’ recent track record is Boomer's concern.

Robert Saleh was appointed as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2021. This was his first time serving as a head coach in the NFL. Prior to joining the Jets, Saleh had a successful career as a defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2020.

However, the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas in the middle of the 2024 season following a disappointing start in a desperate attempt to hit reset. Cut to the off-season and Woody Johnson is seemingly on track to hire another defensive coordinator with no prior head coaching experience, much like he did with Saleh.

While Aaron Glenn has not served as a head coach before, he does have considerable experience in coaching. Here's his resume:

  • Cleveland Browns, Assistant defensive backs coach (2014–2015)
  • New Orleans Saints, Defensive Backs Coach (2016–2020)
  • Detroit Lions, Defensive Coordinator (2021–Present)

Aaron Glenn's roots run deep with New York Jets

Glenn was drafted 12th overall in 1994 and spent eight seasons with the team from 1994 to 2001. In 1996, he set a milestone with a 100-yard interception return TD against the Miami Dolphins. No one else has broken the record in team history.

During his time with the New York Jets, Aaron Glenn earned Pro Bowl honors twice in 1997 and 1998. He was also named to the New York Jets All-Time Four-Decade Team.

Although injuries affected parts of his career, Glenn was a reliable player for the Jets.

In 2001, even after missing three games with a sprained knee, he made 39 tackles and 12 pass deflections, which was the second-highest on the team. After retiring as a player, Glenn used his experience to become a coach. Ever since, he has built a solid resume with stints at the Browns, Saints, and Lions, where he’s shown his ability to develop players and lead defenses.
