Travis Hunter represents more than just a draft prospect for the Tennessee Titans according to former NFL MVP Cam Newton. He could be a potential game-changing athlete who could redefine the franchise's identity with his two-way capabilities.
Newton made these remarks on Thursday during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take." His comments came as the Titans hold the coveted first overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
"There's only one blue player in the draft – that's Travis Hunter. When you think about the Tennessee Titans as a whole, there's not a lot of people you think about in the history of the franchise. Steve McNair, Eddie George. Those guys haven't played in two decades," said Newton.

Travis Hunter's credentials are indeed remarkable. The 2024 Heisman Trophy winner achieved something extraordinary by winning both unanimous All-American and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2024, he caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns while also recording 35 tackles, 11 passes defended, one forced fumble, and four interceptions.
Travis Hunter is a player with multiple dimensions
Newton further emphasized Hunter's potential, stating:
"When you think about who's been the franchise player, you instantly thrust a guy like Travis Hunter in the fold. Now, it gives you that identity you wanna go after. Generational player, he said it in his own words."
The betting markets have taken notice. Hunter's draft odds dramatically shifted from 15-1 to +150 after Titans president Chad Brinker hinted at selecting a "generational talent." BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini noted significant betting action following Brinker's comments.
The Titans stand at a critical juncture. They could select a quarterback like Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders. They could also draft a defensive powerhouse like Abdul Carter, or take a chance on Hunter's unprecedented versatility.
The Titans have only held the first overall pick twice in their history, with the last selection being Hall of Famer Earl Campbell in 1978.
