It was announced Monday that the Dallas Cowboys would be moving on from head coach Mike McCarthy. Owner Jerry Jones issued a statement on X shortly after news surfaced that they would be moving on from him once his contract expires after Tuesday night.

Dallas had their ups and downs in the last five seasons with McCarthy, winning two division titles, appearing in the playoffs three times, and suffering two losing seasons. McCarthy dealt with injuries at the QB position with Dak Prescott missing significant time this season and in 2022.

Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio, former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon spoke about McCarthy and the team's breakup, and suggested that Jones and the Dallas enviornment could have worn McCarthy out, leading to the opporuntity of finding a new opportunity.

Gannon said:

“You’re looking at somebody who has a track record of helping to develop that position [quarterbacks]. Everywhere Mike has been, he’s an authority on that position. He could write books. He’s phenomenal. He’s a really good playcaller. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him wind up at either place [Chicago or New Orleans].
"At some point, as a head coach, you have a responsibility to your coaching staff. You just got the sense that even though the team finished strong, Jerry wants to do his own thing. I think Mike got fatigued in Dallas and wanted the opportunity to go do his own thing.”

Despite the Dallas Cowboys moving on from him, Mike McCarthy has no intentions of stopping being a coach. He took a year off in 2019 after the Green Bay Packers moved on from him following the 2018 season.

With McCarthy set to be able to speak with teams after tonight, the Chicago Bears will get the first crack at interviewing him this Wednesday.

McCarthy then plans on speaking with the New Orleans Saints for their head coach vacancy early next week.

In 18 seasons, McCarthy has a 174-112-2 regular-season record and has gone to the playoffs 12 out of 18 seasons. He's won eight division titles and has a postseason record of 11-11.
