Diontae Johnson was released by the Houston Texans after the wild-card win over the Los Angeles Chargers. On Wednesday afternoon, the Baltimore Ravens claimed Johnson, whom they had just released in December.
The wide receiver won't be able to play nor make any impact on the Baltimore Ravens this postseason and is seen as simply a procedural move that could eventually add another draft pick this spring.
Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky reacted to the Ravens' decision to reclaim Johnson and how the organization was playing "chess not checkers."
"Chess not checkers," Orlovsky wrote on X.

Diontae Johnson will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, depending on the contract he signs. Meanwhile, the Ravens could receive a compensatory pick in 2026.
Texans HC said Diontae Johnson signing 'didn't work out'
In March 2024, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. Just days before the trade deadline in October 2024, the former Pro Bowl participant was then traded to the Baltimore Ravens.
His time with the Ravens was turbulent and he was even suspended one game for conduct issues. He was waived on December 20 and then was picked up by the Houston Texans. After the wild-card game, Johnson was rumored to be unhappy with his lack of production in the playoff game.
On Tuesday, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters:
“With Diontae unfortunately it didn’t work out."
Diontae Johnson had one catch for 12 yards in Saturday's win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Johnson was expected to have an impact on the Texans offense in the postseason after the loss of Tank Dell who suffered a serious knee injury in December.
The wide receiver will hit the free agency market this offseason however, with the way his 2024 NFL season panned out it's unclear how many teams will want to take a chance on him.
