The New York Giants urgently need a quarterback following Daniel Jones's exit midway through the 2024 season. Shedeur Sanders has been the most talked-about candidate, yet general manager Joe Schoen is cautious and avoids hastily labeling him as the franchise's much-needed savior.
Speaking to the press in an afterseason conference on Monday, he revealed that he had not met the soon-to-be-former Colorado Buffalo QB and his entourage:
"We haven't had any conversations with his camp on any of that stuff. We don't really control any of that stuff," Schoen said.

He also reacted to current wide receiver Malik Nabers catching a pass from the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders during the week of the Heisman ceremony in New York:
"That one caught me off guard. That was cool. Unexpected," Schoen added. "I had not seen that before, an NFL receiver and a quarterback prospect playing catch down in New York City. That was interesting."
Joe Schoen vows to avoid acting rashly after being retained as Giants GM for 2025
As the New York Giants kept on losing games in 2024, there was much speculation over whether principal owner John Mara would ditch Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll once it ended. Ultimately, both will be staying put in 2025. However, their future beyond that is uncertain.
Still, Schoen has vowed not to be rash in trying to return the franchise to contention. In that same press conference, he said:
“I’m not going to do a Hail Mary for self-preservation or anything like that. We have a plan in place that we believe in, and we’re going to stick with that.”
Continuing further, the Giants GM assured that he would not cut corners, just like when he declined to extend Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney after 2023 - only for the former to join the 2,000-rushing yard club with the Philadelphia Eagles and the latter to become an interception machine with the Green Bay Packers.
“We’re going to build this thing the right way. I’ve got tremendous respect for ownership and what they believe in," Schoen said. "We have really good communication with them, and they understand where we are and where we’re trying to go. There will be no Hail Marys.”
The New York Giants have the third overall pick in the 2025 Draft and more than $140 million in cap space over the two upcoming seasons.
