Gus Edwards or Tyler Boyd: Who is a better pick?

Super Bowl LVI - Cincinnati Bengals Practice & Media Day
Tyler Boyd is a part of the Cincinnati Bengals team in the NFL

Gus Edwards is an American running back that plays for the Lamar Jackson-led Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. Edwards serves as the number one running back for the franchise and has been a staple in the side since joining the team via the 2018 NFL Draft from Rutgers University.

While Tyler Boyd is an American wide receiver that plays for the Joe Burrows-quarterbacked Cincinnati Bengals. Boyd is the number three wide receiver on the team and has been a contributing member since joining the franchise via the 2016 NFL Draft.

Verdict: This would normally be a difficult choice under appropriate circumstances. It is hard to ignore Edwards' injury issues over the season and how these issues delayed his debut until week seven of the 2022 NFL season. As they say, the best ability is availability, so Tyler Boyd slightly edges Gus Edwards on our fantasy lineup.

Why Tyler Boyd is a better fantasy pick than Gus Edwards

Tyler Boyd is one of the best, if not the best, third option at wide receiver in the league. That's pretty impressive because Ja'Marr Chase has many targets chugged his way, and Joe Burrow also finds Tee Higgins with equal zest.

However, over the years, Boyd has carved out a decent niche for himself, which has to be treasured by a fantasy football league manager.

That's not to discredit Edwards and what he means to the Baltimore Ravens and their offense. However, we cannot ignore the elephant in the room.

Gus Edwards is one of the more injury-prone starters at his position in the NFL, and such injury problems aren't helpful to fantasy managers. So even though Boyd gets more chances to score points, it's difficult to rely upon him when he's unlikely to start or even see a game.

For instance, look at the hamstring injury scare suffered against Tom Brady and the Bucs. So until the Ravens get to the root of the issue, he might have to sit out of our fantasy lineup for the time being.

How did Gus Edwards and Tyler Boyd perform last season?

Gus Edwards and Tyler Boyd were instrumental in their teams' successes in the 2021 NFL season, with their performances being of a higher caliber.

Gus Edwards did a solid job sharing the rock with Lamar Jackson (the best quarterback rusher in the NFL) and other running backs on the Ravens. He put up a stat line of 723 rushing yards and six touchdowns for the 2021 NFL season.

While Tyler Boyd was even more efficient as a third receiver on the pass-first offense at Cincinnati. He was one of Joe Burrows' favorite targets, and he repaid the QB's faith by putting up a stat line of 828 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 16 games played for the season.

How have Gus Edwards and Tyler Boyd performed this season?

So far this 2022 NFL season, Edwards has had a season to forget, as the Baltimore Ravens standout was ruled out for the first six weeks, no thanks to an injury.

However, he came back just in time for a Week 7 matchup against the Cleveland Browns and then, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the next week. Edwards and the Ravens won both games, and he has now accumulated 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the 2022 season.

While Tyler Boyd has been just as reliable and efficient with the Cincinnati Bengals, he has pulled slightly better stats than Gus Edwards and his second wide receiver, Higgins, for the season.

His stat line reads as follows: 828 receiving yards, 12.4 yards per reception, and three touchdowns so far this 2022 NFL season. Not bad for a third option on the offense if you ask us.
