Atlanta Falcons drafted QB Michael Penix Jr. despite signing Kirk Cousins
The Falcons picked Michael Penix Jr. from Washington at No. 8 in April's draft despite already signing a contract with Kirk Cousins in the offseason.
The team took the decision thinking about both the present and the future, as reassured by general manager Terry Fontenot and coach Raheem Morris.
The end goal is to let Cousins lead the team in the short term while simultaneously developing Penix as the Falcons' future leader.
The coach stressed how the Atlanta Falcons did not expect to be in a top 10 pick situation for much longer. Thus, it was the right time to pick a promising quarterback for the long haul.
