The New England Patriots kicked off their preseason with a game against the Carolina Panthers, and fans who wanted to see a bit of Drake Maye left unsatisfied. The Patriots quarterback threw just three passes before the coaching staff called it a day, creating confusion around the plan for his development.
The quarterback who saw a lot of game-time, though, was Joe Milton, who was also drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, albeit in the sixth round to be developed as a backup quarterback. Due to his extended game time, however, Milton was able to showcase some of the skills that got him drafted.
New England fans were impressed with the young quarterback, with some saying that he was already better than Drake Maye, which New England spent a first-round pick into.

"We really wasted a first on Drake Maye. Joe Milton is going to be SPECIAL", said one fan.
"He's running the offense better then everyone else", another said
"I think he’s better than Maye, but you’ll get killed doing this against the 1’s" was another analysis.
It isn't easy to understand why New England kept Maye out of the game if he's not going to be their presumed starter for the season. With Jacoby Brissett on the roster, Maye had to at least get some extra snaps in the preseason to get his feet wet.
Is there any reason for Patriots fans to be excited about the 2024 season?
For Drake Maye and the New England Patriots, it's a new dawn. They joined forces after the NFL Draft, where the Patriots grabbed Maye with the third overall pick. New England fans were extremely excited about the team's pick and believed that they would finally be able to replace Tom Brady after four years of unsuccessful tries.
The feeling around the franchise is totally different. Belichick's hard coaching style is not a secret to anyone who has followed the NFL for a long time, and it worked when they were winning with Tom Brady on the roster; when you're losing and your coach follows a hard line, well, players aren't going to take it.
Even though Jerod Mayo played for Belichick, the early expectations about his style are totally different. We'll see if this remains the same throughout the season.
