The Aaron Rodgers-led New York Jets lost yet another game. This time, it was the Seattle Seahawks who handed the team their ninth loss of the season, falling 26-21 on Sunday. In particular, Rodgers, who the Jets brought in to turn the team into a championship contender, failed to show up in the dying moments of the game.

Naturally, the veteran quarterback faced heavy criticism from NFL fans after New York fell to 3-9.

"There’s no way Aaron Rodgers plays in the NFL after this season, he’s the worst QB in the LEAGUE!!!" one angry fan wrote.
A second fan commented, "Rodgers is washed."
While another fan opined, "It’s time to hang it up Rodgers."

With 21 completions on 39 attempts, 185 yards, two TDs and a costly interception, Aaron Rodgers' performance made it evident how the Jets are going straight south.

As per Spotrac, Rodgers is getting an average annual salary of $37,500,000 after signing a three-year, $112,500,000 contract with the Jets in April 2023.

Given Aaron Rodgers' performance so far with the Jets, the question of whether to keep or release him in 2025 is coming into question. If the team wants to, it is going to be an expensive one with major salary cap implications in the picture.

First, the Jets have flexibility. Rodgers is signed for the 2025 season but with no guaranteed money left on his deal. However, axing the veteran QB comes with a price tag — $49 million in dead money from pro-rated bonuses from 2023.

The $49 million could be distributed over two years if he is cut after June 1. However, the hit is no less with $14 million in 2025 and $35 million in 2026.

Suppose, if Rodgers returns to play for one more season, his $23.5 million cap charge in 2025 would be manageable. However, a $35 million option bonus would be required ahead of the 2025 season.

The real dilemma is the long-term financial consequences. A 2025 return will hike the dead money charge in 2026 to $63 million, which will make it difficult for the Jets to manage their future cap space.

Moreover, spreading this cost into 2027 will lead the team to pay for Aaron Rodgers even after his departure.

In this scenario, negotiating with Rodgers or restructuring his deal would be an ideal solution for the New York Jets.
