Super Bowl XLVII - Baltimore Ravens vs San Francisco 49ers

John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh are the sons of Jack Harbaugh, a former college football coach.

The brothers grew up around football, thanks to their father's job description, and it's clear that the football bug bit them early. Both brothers loved football, but the younger one, Jim, was a solid player in the pros. He played in the NFL for a couple of years as a quarterback. The older quarterback, though, dedicated his time to learning coaching.

As such, at the moment, there is only one Harbaugh brother in the National Football League. There used to be two at some point, but the younger one is now coaching at the college level.

Read on to find out who is the more successful of the two brothers and why the other has abandoned coaching at the highest level since leaving the league.

John Harbaugh's NFL coaching legacy

John Harbaugh is the current coach of the Lamar Jackson-led Baltimore Ravens. He was appointed by the Ravens as their coach in 2008 and has remained so since then.

Before snagging the Ravens' job, Harbaugh was a special teams coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles. After gathering experience there, he took up the coach job at the Ravens.

The Ravens' job looked tailor-made for Harbaugh's pragmatic playing style. The team bought in their coach's philosophy, and they were rewarded with a Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XLVII. Harbaugh beat someone special on that Super Bowl trip, and we're about to introduce him.

Jim Harbaugh's NFL coaching legacy

Jim Harbaugh was the one who played quarterback in the NFL. He was the highly recruited one out of college and looked like he was going to be an NFL-centered coach. However, almost a decade has gone since he was fired from his last NFL job.

Jim was appointed the San Francisco 49ers coach ahead of the 2011 NFL season. He was superb there, accumulating a record of 44-19-1. His NFL coaching career highlights include making the playoffs in his first three seasons as San Francisco coach. There, at the Super Bowl LVII, he had a matchup with his big brother John.

The game was the first in NFL history where two brothers were at the opposing end of a Super Bowl game as coach. It was John Harbaugh who prevailed, but it was a win for the family.

Meanwhile, San Francisco 49ers fired Jim after a dismal fourth season with the team. He was quickly employed by the Michigan Wolverines, a team he has radically improved over the years. At this point, it's unclear whether Jim will return to the NFL.

Which of the Harbaugh brothers has had a more successful NFL coaching career?

John has had the more successful NFL coaching career compared to his brother Jim.

John is a Super Bowl champion, a feat not everyone can boast of. He might not have been as good a football player as his brother Jim, but he showed his mettle in the coaching room.

Furthermore, John has been a coach in the NFL for over a decade. Jim, meanwhile, only lasted for four seasons before getting fired by the 49ers. Both brothers are brilliant coaches, but John will likely have a significantly better NFL coaching legacy when their careers would be done and dusted.
