With Mike McCarthy shown the exit door, Dallas Cowboys general manager Jerry Jones is eyeing Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders to take over. Jones reached out to 'Coach Prime' on Monday to gauge the NFL legend's interest in taking over the coaching job at the most valuable franchise in all of sports.
Interestingly, there are talks about the cost of making it happen. With an $8 million buyout clause tied to Sanders’ current contract, veteran NFL reporter Charean Williams didn’t mince words.
"Deion has an $8 million buyout, Belichick $10 million, and Sark $6 million. Jerry doesn’t pay off coaches to get rid of them. In what world does anyone think he’d pay to buy out a contract," she wrote on X.

Once the tweet went viral, NFL fans came up with their takes.
"Is he really THAT cheap," wrote one.
Another commented:
"He was paying Mike $8 mil range and he’s cheap and frugal. It’s not about winning for JJ. It’s about making money."
Meanwhile, a third fan reacted, writing:
"Jerry will never hire anyone again who might cast a shadow on him. After the games, the media goes to Jerry for comment. He loves that and will never give it up."
On the contrary, there were fans, who agreed with Charean Williams but at the same time mentioned how Jones can change because Coach Prime is clearly an investment.
"Deion would be a smart business move. Jerry would make 8mil+ just in his name alone," one fan wrote.
For the Dallas Cowboys fan base, who have starved for a championship since the mid-’90s, Deion Sanders will be more than just a mere coaching hire. His leadership has already transformed the Colorado Buffaloes football program. Thus, given his playing career plus his NCAA coaching career, he is a lucrative prospect.
Deion Sanders' coaching candidacy for Dallas Cowboys might not work out
Deion Sanders has turned teams like Jackson State and Colorado into winners. However, there are some reasons which could hinder a potential match between the Cowboys and the Pro Football Hall of Famer.
First, Sanders has said he’d want to coach his son, CU QB, Shedeur Sanders. But Shedeur is likely to be one of the first players picked in the NFL Draft and the Cowboys’ 12th pick isn’t high enough. To move up, Dallas would need to trade several key players or draft picks, which might not be worth it. Moreover, Cowboys' veteran QB, Dak Prescott is on a massive $240 million contract along with a no-trade clause. Therefore, replacing him is a near impossibility.
Secondly, at Colorado, Sanders rebuilt the team his way. In Dallas, Jones makes the big decisions, so Sanders would have less control. Thirdly, the team also doesn’t have much money to spend. Therefore, it will make it hard for Deion Sanders to bring in new players.
That said, for now, this story adds more drama to the Cowboys’ offseason and keeps fans talking about America’s Team.
