Jameis Winston was playing the only way he knew, slinging balls all around the park, but he would never have expected to catch strays from Troy Aikman. The Hall-of-Fame former Cowboys quarterback was in the booth for the Monday Night Football clash between the Cleveland Browns and the Denver Broncos.
In the first half, Jameis Winston was at his gun-slinging best and worst. He had two touchdowns for more than 200 yards in the first two periods. One of them came within the two-minute warning that brought the score down to 21-17 after the Broncos had taken an 11-point lead. That gap itself was a product of the Browns' quarterback's carelessness with the ball as he gave up a pick-six when the score was 14-10 and Cleveland was in field goal range.
Once the defender Nik Bonitto got the ball, he ran it back for over 70 yards without encountering any Browns player. The further player back on the play on offense was Jameis Winston and he was not even in the frame when the Broncos player scored.

That prompted Troy Aikman to say that he could take on the Cleveland quarterback in a foot race. When his co-commentator Joe Buck queried if the former Dallas star meant in his prime, the Hall-of-Famer seemed to indicate that he could take the Browns player even now.
Fans who were following the action could not help but reply incredulously. Jameis Winston might have thrown a bad interception against the Broncos but for a retired player like Troy Aikman to say they could beat any NFL player was a bold ask. Here are some of the reactions from X/Twitter.
Some observers even said took the commentator's comments as a challenge and said that the race needs to happen to prove who is faster. Here are some more responses from the social media platform.
"Troy Aikman vs Jameis Winston in a race. Needs to happen." - wrote one.
"Troy aikman just said he could beat Jameis Winston in a foot race in the year 2024 of our lord" - said another.
"Did Troy Aikman just challenge Jameis Winston to a race?" - joked a third.
Jameis Winston not the only former Bucs QB Troy Aikman has flamed for speed
Jameis Winston is in elite company after this comment from Troy Aikman. Some years earlier, while complementing Tom Brady, the former Cowboys legend had claimed that he could beat the seven-time Super Bowl winner for speed.
The Hall-of-Famer had said,
“[Tom Brady]’s the most unathletic quarterback in the game. I’m 56 years old and I’m pretty confident I can outrun him in the 40 yard dash.”
The Browns quarterback can only dream of being put in the same bracket as the GOAT, but one of the greatest players in that position just did so from his commentating booth.
