Is Zach Wilson era over? Jets tipped to move for Josh Allen-like QB in 2023 NFL Draft

Are the New York Jets ready to officially move on from Zach Wilson?
Are the New York Jets ready to officially move on from Zach Wilson?

Has Zach Wilson taken his final reps as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets? Since the quarterback was benched in his second season in the NFL, rumors have swirled that the Jets could decide to move on from Wilson and look for a new starting quarterback.

According to Chad Reuter, the draft analyst for NFL.com, the New York Jets will draft Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson. Reuter said that Jets general manager Joe Douglas moved on from Sam Darnold after just two seasons, so he could very well move on from Wilson after just two seasons as well.

Reuter said that Anthony Richardson would be a good fit for the Jets offense because he is quick on his feet and although his accuracy may stray from time to time, his velocity is still impressive. Reuter went as far as to say that Richardson could end up being the best playmaker out of the 2023 quarterback class for years to come.

Richardson started just 13 games for the Florida Gators, so there could still be room for him to grow as a quarterback. But his speed and size make him an attractive draft pick and a player that many teams may have their eye on.

The Buffalo Bills have run the AFC East for the past few seasons and finding a playmaker like quarterback Josh Allen is what the Jets need to do. Early scouting reports suggest that Richardson could be the playmaker that the Jets offense needs in order to compete in the race for the division.

Will the New York Jets trade QB Zach Wilson?

It's likely that the New York Jets will either draft a quarterback or perhaps sign a veteran quarterback this offseason. But in either case, what would the team decide to do with Zach Wilson?

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, the Jets won't trade Wilson because there isn't much trade value for the quarterback heading into his third NFL season. Releasing him also wouldn't resolve anything, so if and when the team acquires another quarterback, he would move into the backup role, with the hope that the quarterback would continue to develop and learn along the way.

The New York Jets are only due to pay the quarterback $3.8 million in 2023, so, making him the backup quarterback wouldn't be an expensive move.
