The Los Angeles Chargers started the year 7-3 and looked primed to be one of the dark hoses to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The key to their success was their exceptional defense and two-pronged ground game, featuring J.K. Dobbins as the lead and Gus Edwards as his backup.
However, in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens, Dobbins suffered a left knee injury and exited the game. There was genuine concern as it was the same knee that had to be surgically repaired in 2021 after he tore his ACL in a preseason game.
Fortunately for Dobbins — considering his history — it was only an MCL sprain, but the Chargers took no risks and placed him on the Injured Reserves, ruling him out of action for their next four games.

On Monday, head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed that Dobbins is off the IR list and the team has officially opened the running back's 21-day practice window. He will subsequently return to team practice this week, a massive boost for the Chargers.
Will J.K. Dobbins play in Week 17 vs. Patriots?
Harbaugh did not confirm whether J.K. Dobbins would play in their road game against the New England Patriots on Sunday. However, considering he was only dealing with a sprain and will practice with the team throughout the week, the probability of him suiting up and marking his return to the field at Gillette Stadium is high.
The Chargers need one win in their last two games to book their playoff berth. They'd like to get it over with on Sunday and rest key starters, like Dobbins, in Week 18 to ensure they are fresh and healthy for their road playoff game.
J.K. Dobbins Stats: How has RB fared this season?
In 11 games for the Chargers, J.K. Dobbins rushed for 766 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 28 passes for 134 yards. Despite missing four games, he has more rushing yards than Gus Edwards (365), Justin Herbert (252) and Kimani Vidal (131) combined.
Dobbins' absence has had an adverse effect on LA's ground game. In their first 11 games, they averaged 118.1 rushing yards per game. Over their last four, they have mustered only 74.8 rushing yards on average.
His return will be a welcome sight for head coach Jim Harbaugh, who could revert to the offensive strategy that helped them start the year 7-3.
