Jake Moody grilled by 49ers fans for missing multiple field goals in 40-34 loss to Lions - "His career is over"

Jake Moody missed two crucial field goals in the 49ers' loss to the Lions in what was the latest disappointing performance by the San Francisco kicker. They came at moments that could have changed the direction of the game.

Detroit came into this game fully focused on avenging their loss in the NFC Championship game last season. Even though their playoff destiny is fully dependent on what they do in the final match against the Vikings, there was no let-up here.

However, the 49ers were not in the mood to be good hosts and matched the Lions on every drive. The home team was leading 21-13 and had the chance to take a double-digit lead going into the break. Jake Moody missed it and that allowed the visitors to come up and tie the scores after halftime.

A field goal and touchdown by Detroit, with a touchdown and an interception by Brock Purdy in between, saw them up 31-28. Jake Moody had the chance to tie up the scores with a field goal and missed yet again. The kicker would miss an extra point in the two-minute warning and shank an onside kick attempt straight out of play to add to his misery.

To compound his woes, fans went on X/Twitter to say that he should not be called upon in the future. Here are some reactions.

Even though this was a meaningless game for the 49ers, fans continued to be scathing in their assessment of the kicker. Here are some more comments.

"Jake Moody is quite easily the worst special teams player in NFL history. Drafted this guy in the THIRD ROUND so he could consistently miss easy FGs, fail to get kickoffs to the landing zone, and blast onside kicks out of bounds for two years." - vented one fan.

"Thanks to Jake moody not being able to make His kicks let’s be real the lions lose if moody hits those and he’s a big reason why the niners are 6-10" - said another.

"Only Jake Moody can make an onside kick look worse than his missed FGs" - lamented a third.

Had Jake Moody kicked both those field goals and made his extra point, that would have led to seven additional points for the 49ers. They lost by six to the Lions. So, one could fairly say that his performance was crucial in this match.

This was still a dead rubber. Perhaps his costliest mistake came in the last Super Bowl where San Francisco lost to Kansas City in overtime. Had he not missed an extra-point conversion in that game, the Chiefs would have had a point less in regulation time.

Kyle Shanahan is acutely aware this is becoming an issue. He did not throw Jake Moody under the bus after the game but when asked about the kicker's future, but his response was not too subtle.

"We already are. We're evaluating all positions." - replied the 49ers head coach when asked if the kicker's future place was being evaluated.

It is tough to see how the player rebounds from this performance. However, if Shanahan's words are prescient, Moody might not be the only one whose career in San Francisco is in jeopardy after this season.
