Jameson Williams could give Lions a consistent pass attack

2022 NFL Draft - Round 1
Jameson Williams gets selected by the Detroit Lions

Sometimes a team values a prospect so much that trading up to select them during the draft is a no-brainer. That's exactly how the Detroit Lions viewed Alabama stud Jameson Williams.

The Lions entered the 2022 NFL Draft with a pair of first-round picks. After Travon Walker was selected first-overall by Jacksonville, they chose to roll with Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson. Their second-of-two first-round picks was 32nd-overall, but the team didn't want to wait that long, when a stud was available.

In a rare inter-division agreement, the Vikings agreed to trade the 12th-overall pick to Detroit in exchange for a bundle of picks that included the Lions' final selection in the first-round. With their new draft pick, Detroit selected Alabama wideout Jameson Williams.

It's no secret what made the Lions feel as if they needed Jameson Williams was his final year at Alabama, where the 12th-overall pick logged 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns through the air.

Williams was poised to indefinitely be a top-pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, until the unthinkable happened. During CFP's latest national championship game that put Alabama up against Georgia, the star receiver tore his ACL, causing teams to second-guess their interest in drafting him.

The Detroit Lions never had any second thoughts, and 13 weeks into the 2022 season, Jameson Williams is ready to make his NFL debut. The 21-year-old was activated by Detroit on Saturday, lining him up to get his first action as a pro against the Jaguars on Sunday.

If all goes as planned, the Lions could find themselves with a consistent passing attack in the near future.

The Detroit Lions' passing attack has been potent at times, but lack of consistency is a problem

Detroit's passing attack has shone at times, while being non-existent other times. The unit has had highs such as 375 total passing yards vs. Seattle and 311 against Miami, and has sank to the bottom with passing performances such as 165 yards when playing the Giants and a season-low 135 against Green Bay.

All-in-all, Jared Goff has the ninth-most yards through the NFL this season, but hasn't strung together more than three games in a row with at least 230 passing yards.

Jameson Williams can help change that, who alongside young star Amon-Ra St. Brown and first-year Lion D.J. Chark are a good enough trio on paper to give the best of secondaries a headache.

Chark has only appeared in five contests this season after battling injury, recording nine receptions, 114 yards and two scores. Both he and Williams will be available as the Lions prepare to go to battle against Chark's former team, the Jacksonville Jaguars.
