In a duel between two exciting rookie quarterbacks, Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders hosted Michael Penix Jr. and the Atlanta Falcons at Northwest Stadium in a primetime duel on Sunday Night Football. The home team was hoping to lock in its playoff berth with a win, while the visitors needed a victory to reclaim the top spot in the NFC South standings and control their destiny heading into Week 18.
With so much at stake, the game was expected to be a thriller and it did not disappoint. The two teams couldn't be separated in regulation and needed overtime to decide a winner.
The Commanders won the coin toss and elected to receive, and that's all Daniels needed, as he engineered a stellar game-winning drive to secure a hard-fought 30-24 win and Washington's spot in the playoffs.

The rookie finished with 227 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception and rushed for an incredible 127 yards on 16 carries. It was his first career game with over 100 rushing yards and it couldn't come at a more opportune time.
Daniels also etched his name in the history books. He broke the NFL record for most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback which was set by former Commanders star Robert Griffin III. The retired quarterback finished his rookie season with 815 rushing yards. Daniels now has 864 and has one more game left to play.
Daniels' mother, Regina Jackson, reposted Bleacher Report's tweet about Daniels breaking RGIII's record and had a one-word reaction to it, writing:
"Blessed."
Jayden Daniels stats: QB having a historic season
Jayden Daniels isn't only having one of the best seasons for a dual-threat quarterback in their rookie year but his debut season ranks among the best for a signal-caller who can run with the ball.
In the win over the Falcons, he became only the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 3,500 passing yards and rush for over 800 yards. Kyler Murray (2020) and Lamar Jackson (2023 and 2024) are the only other stars to achieve this feat.
Jayden Daniels' exceptional numbers coupled with the Commanders' 11-5 record have made him the favorite to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
