Jerod Mayo gets extremely blunt on assessment of Patriots after Chargers humiliate NE 40-7 at home - Source: Imagn

After a valiant performance on the road against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo likely expected his team to put up a strong fight against the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium on Saturday. However, it was quite the opposite.

The visitors' defense completely nullified the home team's offense, giving up only 181 yards and one touchdown. Their offense dominated on the ground and in the air, racking up 428 yards, and left with a 40-7 win, confirming their spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Patriots dropped to 3-13, the second-worst record in the league behind the 2-13 New York Giants.

In the postgame press conference, Mayo did not mince words about his team's performance and admitted the team was completely outmatched, outcoached, and outplayed by a superior team. When asked about his assessment of the game, the rookie head coach said:

"There's really nothing good to take out of that game today. Just the lack of execution. Look, that's a good football team, and they're a well-coached football team. We just didn't play well enough in any phase of the game. No complementary football, and that's what you get."

Jerod Mayo downplays concerns about future

While the season is already a massive letdown, Jerod Mayo and the Patriots are now tasked with beating the Buffalo Bills in their season finale at Gillette Stadium in Week 18 to match the 4-13 record they finished with last season and avoid finishing a campaign with fewer than four wins for the first time since 1992.

When asked if he and the team's offensive and defensive coordinators would be coaching for their jobs against the Bills, he said:

"I'm always under pressure and it's been that way for a very long time, not just when I became the head coach of the Patriots. I'm okay. Look, I always do what's best for the team."

The Patriots' top brass will mull over the team's direction in the offseason and decide whether Jerod Mayo and his staff are the right men to lead the franchise in 2025. However, if the Bills hammer the Patriots in Week 18, they could reach a conclusion swiftly and fire the head coach after only one season in charge of the team.
