Now that the curtain has closed on the Dallas Cowboys' 2024 season, Jerry Jones has some decisions to make. His HC, Mike McCarthy, is up for a contract extension by January 14, and with a bit more than a week to go, Jones has still not made a decision.
After the loss during in season finale against division rivals, the Washington Commanders, reporters asked Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy about their futures and the future of the team. When asked whether he would stick on with the Cowboys and get the extension, McCarthy seemed confident that he would.
"I have a lot of confidence in myself as a head coach. ... I'm definitely in position with Jerry to move the program forward. There's no question about that in mind."

Jerry Jones is in two minds about continuing with McCarthy or letting him go, as revealed in the answers he gave to reporters after the season finale disappointment.
"I don't know that I am considering making a change."
NFL insider claims Jerry Jones might not extend Mike McCarthy
According to Sports Illustrated insider, Albert Breer, the team was pleased with the work that McCarthy had done during the season considering the laundry list of injuries that the team was plagued with this year, including their QB Dak Prescott.
"If McCarthy still had years on his contract, they would go forward with him. I think they're that impressed with the job that he's done. The problem is they have to draft an entirely new contract. Virtually every assistant on his staff is up, too. They would basically have to redo contracts for everyone on his staff."
However, drawing up new contracts for him and his assistants, who were also up for extension, would be a humongous task that might weigh against retaining him. The Cowboys might just decide to hire a new coach entirely.
With many coaches such as Robert Saleh and Matt Eberflus on the market, the Cowboys would be split for choice. As the offseason kicks off, Cowboys fans are waiting with bated breath how their owner-cum-GM would chart the course of "America's Team".
