"Jerry Jones is lying" - Stephen A. Smith explains why Mike McCarthy will get fired if Cowboys falter in playoffs

Stephen A. Smith doesn't believe that Jerry Jones is being truthful about the future of head coach Mike McCarthy.

Stephen A. Smith had a strong opinion about the Dallas Cowboys' future if they aren't successful in the playoffs. On Tuesday morning, Smith said that he doesn't believe Cowboys owner Jerry Jones when he says that he will stick with head coach Mike McCarthy after this season.

Smith said that if the Cowboys lose next week to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then McCarthy will be let go. The analyst added that after last week's performance in the season finale against the Commanders, there is no way that Jones retains him.

"Jerry Jones is lying to you. He's lying. Mike McCarthy loses this game, Mike McCarthy gonna get fired. I don't give a damn what anybody says... There is no way that Jerry Jones can invest this time, this energy, this passion, and this money in this franchise, [and] witness what he just witnessed this past weekend in the nation's capital."

Smith believes that this may be the last chance for McCarthy. If the Dallas Cowboys can't defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady, who won the division with a losing record, then there may not be any hope for the team.

"He watched the Dallas Cowboys go into the nation's capital against a third-string quarterback and look like that. And lose with his starters on the field. And then follow that up by showing up for the playoffs and potentially sticking up the joint and getting 45-year-old Tom Brady to knock you out of the postseason after the way Tampa Bay looked this season. Okay, all of that happens. And Mike McCarthy keeping his job?"

He then finished by saying that Sean Payton is available to be hired as head coach. Smith also said that Dan Quinn is being interviewed by many teams for a head coaching position. He added that Jerry Jones is smart enough not to add any 'fuel to the fire' and just wait and see what happens.

"This is why Sean Payton is available. Whether it's for the Cowboys or the Chargers. This was, Dan Quinn is a defensive coordinator and, oh, by the way, you know, he's being interviewed or he's gonna get interviewed for jobs, including the Denver Broncos job. No way in hell! Jerry Jones is just smart enough to sit up there and not add fuel to that fire at this particular moment in time because pressure breaks pipes, and you don't need to add more pressure that is already obviously on the Dallas Cowboys."

What did Jerry Jones say about Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy?

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said that he believes Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones is lying about head coach Mike McCarthy's future with the team. But what did Jones say about his team's head coach?

Jerry Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas this week. He was asked about McCarthy's future if his team lose in the Wild Card round to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night at Raymond James Stadium.

Jones said that he wouldn't judge Mike McCarthy's performance off just one game. The team owner also said that he doesn't even want to think about the possibility of Dallas losing to Brady and the Bucs.

“No, I don’t even want to. No. That’s it. I don’t need to get into all the plusses or minuses. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate McCarthy on than this playoff game.”

Jones' support of his head coach has many believing that he won't fire him after this season, despite the roller coaster that the team witnessed. If they bring that same inconsistent performance on Monday night, they may be 'one and done'.
