Haason Reddick contract holdout

Haason Reddick is in a complicated situation with the New York Jets ahead of the 2024 NFL season. He was acquired via trade with the Philadelphia Eagles during the offseason after being unhappy with his contract. Despite being traded, he appears to be in the same situation with his new team.

According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Reddick and the Jets have different expectations about a contract extension this year. Hughes reported that the Jets were permitted to speak with Reddick before the trade about a potential raise in his salary, but it didn't meet what he was seeking. They executed the trade anyway, and now the two sides are in a dispute.

Reddick is currently holding out for a new contract by skipping all of the Jets' offseason programs, including their recently opened training camp. He is scheduled to receive a fine of $50,000 for each day he misses, but he apparently believes that his eventual extension will be worth the punishment.

Hughes explained that Haason Reddick is seeking a new deal worth somewhere in the range of $25 to $28 million in AAV. The Jets have allegedly offered him a raise from his current one-year deal worth $14.5 million, but they are reportedly far from what the edge rusher is asking for.

The situation appears to be a miscommunication between Reddick and the Jets from the start. He wants an extension prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season, but the team would rather negotiate a new deal after he plays in regular-season games for it, which he hasn't done yet.

The Jets were expecting him to attend training camp, but regardless of his holdout, they have reportedly informed Reddick that they do not intend to get rid of him. This creates a standoff between the two sides, as Reddick apparently doesn't plan to get back on the football field until he gets a new contract.

Jets want to use a familiar strategy in Haason Reddick contract negotiations

The New York Jets reportedly want to wait and see what Haason Reddick brings to their defense in actual games before giving him a new contract. They used a similar approach with John Franklin-Meyers, who joined the team in a similar situation. Per reports, Reddick disagrees with this approach, even though it earned Franklin-Meyers a new deal after his strong performance.

The issue with the Jets' defense this year is that they heavily invested in Reddick's availability. They moved on from John Franklin-Meyers and Bryce Huff during the offseason, so Reddick was expected to fill their pass-rushing vacancy. While the 2024 NFL season is less than two months away, it will be interesting to see which side gives in.
